What laptop should I buy?

I'm going into college next year and I was wondering what the ideal laptop is. I will mainly be taking notes and working with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Powerpoint, etc.). I'm not really looking for a gaming rig. Can anyone recommend a rather cheap laptop (<$800) that THEY USED throughout college?
