Amp and Sub Combo Help?

Pretty simple question here. Would a single 12" alpine type r 2 ohm in ported box pound hard with 500 watt alpine amp? could this system be heard for blocks? I have the amp but might upgrade to a 850 or 1000 watt? What do you all think?
