What can I do about my laptop keyboard?

My keyboard on my emachine laptop is malfunctioning. Certain buttons work but have numbers added to them or the wrong letter. My computer was just fine until my neighbor was trying to do something and went into the start up screen. He now says he thinks DOS is not recognizing the keyboard correctly. Any help or info would be great. Thanks!
