Is my ps2 broken or is just the controller?

So anyways all of a sudden i turned on my ps2 and it on a continuous scroll. Than i took out both controllers and i noticed that one of them the inside one of the wires are missing in the usb port. Basically when you unplug the controller one of the pieces on the inside of the cord you see is missing. So than i put my other controller the first one on the second one while at the browser menu and nothing moved. So now obviously the controller is broken since that piece is missing but is the 2nd port also broken or if i bought another controller things will be fine. I played a game just fine for 5 min with no problem.
