Laptop virus for the IBM?

When i turn on my IBM which is running windows XP sometimes it goes through but then it freezes over i can turn the volume up and down but i cant control anything such as the mouse. on other times it freezes on the boot up screen and i have to turn it off by holding down the power button. and more frequently when i turn it on the screen does not even turn on, when i unplug the power cable it beeps but that is the only action it will do. Can anyone help?
